These are not random donations — our partners on the ground know their communities, know their leaders, and help select the books that will be most useful. Let us introduce you to one of those pastors
Pastor Joely lives on the outskirts of Antsiribé, Madagascar. He became a pastor later in life, after years of farming — and these days, he still does both. He wakes at 5:30 each morning to work his land with a hoe and a rake. He grows rice and garlic, raises a few pigs and chickens. On a good month, this brings in less than sixty dollars.
His daily rhythm is shaped by necessity. Mornings and early afternoons go to farmwork. At lunch, he sits down with his Bible, a simple plate of rice and beans, and prepares his sermon. That midday hour is his study time. Once evening comes and darkness falls, there is no more studying — he has no electricity and cannot afford candles to read by. The work of understanding Scripture has to happen in the light.
When we visited, we brought a small library of thirty books and a brand new study Bible. The moment we handed them to Joely and his wife, their faces lit up with tears of joy. They carefully examined each book — touching the covers, flipping through the pages, marveling at the study Bible’s notes and maps. For a man who had spent years working with just his Bible and the notes from his training, this small library represented something extraordinary. More tools to understand God’s Word. More help to teach the people the Lord had entrusted to him.
His wife stood beside him, both of them smiling, clearly overwhelmed. In their gratitude, we saw something beautiful: people who have so little materially, but who are rich in dedication and joy.
Joely continues his routine — farming by day, studying at lunch, preaching on Sundays. But now, during those precious daylight hours when he can read, he has thirty more books to help him grow and serve his community better.
It was a simple gift that cost us relatively little. To Pastor Joely, it was a treasure.
